Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’o

Written by Lupita Nyong’o, Illustrated by Vashti Harrison, Published by Simon & Schuster, 2019. (fiction, ages 4-9)

IMG_2764Growing up Chinese Filipino there were comments from both communities regarding colorism. If you were born with a fair complexion, you were considered “beautiful” and “the ideal”. You must also cover up to maintain it, along with countless cosmetics and lotions designed to lighten your complexion. If you were dark, it meant that you were “low-class” and “less desirable”. Luckily those messages never stuck personally, but I know it continues to be a major issue in many communities. That is why this title is so vital in teaching that there is more to being beautiful.

BACKGROUND

African American Sulwe wishes she could lighten her skin. Maybe then she could be considered beautiful and make friends like her sister. Later does she learn what it means to love yourself. #OwnVoices

BEST FOR

About a ten minute read aloud that is great for teaching self-love, acceptance, tolerance, and definitions of beauty. Also could be used for a folktale unit.

A Boy Like You by Frank Murphy

Written by Frank Murphy, Illustrated by Kayla Harren, Published by Sleeping Bear Press, 2019. (fiction, ages 6-8)

IMG_2146

Being the mother of two very energetic boys I often think about the kind of messages they get from me and their environment regarding masculinity and their “expected” role in society. Books like these that emphasize what good in the world a boy can do are helpful in teaching empathy and healthy emotional expression. Plus, the illustrations are beautiful.

BACKGROUND

A mixed race African American boy is narrated through what it means to be an individual that is thoughtful, an advocate for justice, and emotionally healthy.

BEST FOR

About a seven minute read aloud that would be good in teaching empathy, emotional intelligence, promoting justice, and confidence.

A Map Into The World by Kao Kalia Yang

Written by Kao Kalia Yang, Illustrated by Seo Kim, Published by Carolrhoda Books, 2019 (picture book, 5-8)

MaptoworldIn my own reading history this is the first picture book I’ve seen that features a Hmong American character. Even rarer is the girl and her family is portrayed in a contemporary setting. The narrative of this title is so poetic and peaceful. The tone and illustrations leaves you with a lingering feeling of comfort, the same type of feeling you get after sitting and letting your eyes quietly explore a beautiful natural scenery. A gentle read.

BACKGROUND

Young Hmong American Paj Ntaub experiences a new home, getting twin baby brothers as well as exploring the quiet natural joys around her. When her friendly neighbor Bob loses his beloved wife, Paj Ntaub finds her own way to offer comfort. #Ownvoices

BEST FOR

About a fifteen minute read aloud that touches on the Hmong American experience. Also a great way to model kindness, finding joy in everyday things, curiosity, and appreciating nature.

The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander

Written by Kwame Alexander, illustrated by Kadir Nelson, Published by Versify, 2019 (fiction, 6-9)

IMG_2500I gasped in awe at how powerful this book was when I first read it. It was no surprise to later learn that it is not only the 2020 Caldecott Medal winner, but also a Coretta Scott King Illustrator winner, as well as a 2020 Newbery Honor Book. It also has the most epic book trailer I have ever seen! If you are unfamiliar, treat yourself. This book originally was a poem Alexander wrote when his second daughter was born. I would use it as a hook for a biography or history project for students even in the high school level. Students could figure out and study the contribution of every individual that is featured.

BACKGROUND

A poem honoring all the African American pioneers, activists, artists, and brave souls that sacrificed and paved the way for progress and opportunities for the future of all. #Ownvoices

BEST FOR

About a five minute read aloud that highlights notable African Americans in the illustrations. A detailed afterword and guide to each individual is provided following the poem. This could be a discussion starter for the atrocities of slavery, hate crimes, violence against blacks, and the importance of #blacklivesmatter. Also a great read for a biography unit, civil rights movement, to inspire activism in students, or highlight African American contributions to society.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020: If You Were Me and Lived in…China by Carole P. Roman

Written by Carole P. Roman, Illustrated by Kelsea Wierenga, Published by Chelshire, 2015 (nonfiction, 6-9)

Iyluchina

This title is part of a nonfiction series. I was given a copy by the author Carole Roman in celebration of Multicultural Children’s Book Day. This title explores the Chinese culture explaining main holidays, landmarks, as well as a few Chinese words. There was only a slight slip up that I noticed; Under the food section it mentioned that fried ice cream is a common dessert in China. However, fried ice cream is mostly served in Chinese restaurants in Australia, not China. Besides that, there are plenty of facts having to do with geography as well as historical sites such as the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors.

BACKGROUND

Readers are taken through an informative tour of China and its culture. The text includes pronunciation guides, statistics, as well as highlights of the many wonders of China.

BEST FOR

This nonfiction would be suitable for a research project or lesson. It would be too long a read aloud for one storytime, unless you were planning to read it over several days.
